And now Bro. Grant.
What a year 2006 is
turning out to be. God has seen it fit to call home a few of the
saints and their departure has left a void and emptiness in
their families but a reminder to all of us that our existence in
this world is temporary and that ultimately God will take us
home.
Yet there is a more
immediate realization that dawns upon us as we contemplate the
passing of Sis. Thomas, Sis. Clement and Sis. Harewood and Bro.
Grant. It is a realization that the age demographic of the
church is changing and that the “soldiers” who labored to ensure
that the Three Angels Message was heard and lived, in the Guapo
area, are moving on to be asleep in Jesus, waiting for the
imminent return of Our Lord and Savior.
Yet as they sleep, the work
is NOT FINISHED and as that hymn we sing so often says
“Where are the reapers or who will come?” There is no doubt in
the mind and consciousness of the leadership of the church that
passing on to the next generation, a passion for ministry and
the salvation of souls is our greatest challenge. The exemplars
that have gone on have left a legacy of sacrifice that our
generation seems unwilling to make or even consider. Who can
forget the many Friday’s; Sis Thomas came and prepared the
church for Sabbath services or Sis. Clements untiring efforts at
investment projects year after year and her phenomenal memory
which was manifested in the large number of “Morning Watch”
texts she could recite by rote. Can we forget Sis Harewood’s
consistent commitment to her work as a deaconess and her
compassion and capacity for “welfare” work? At this time we
should never forget as well Bro. Grant’s long and meritorious
service as a church treasurer and elder nor his fervent
commitment to the spirit of prophecy and the Sabbath.
Are these examples of
faithfulness in ministry repeatable? Can such unselfish service
be manifested in the current cadre of church members? These are
questions worthy of contemplation and it may well be that our
ability to minister to others through such selfless servants
must now come through deliberate action. The time has come where
the local may have to consider the establishment of a ministry
academy where local “leaders” are used to train members for
ministry. Our passion for Christianity and ministry needs to be
rekindled so that their (those who have gone on) living “will
not be in vain”.
Please pray for the
churches as we grapple will this challenge of continuity and by
God’s grace we will be victorious.
Fitzroy.
